About me:
Having been a licensed ham for 30 years now in the US, I am currently the founding Michigan Association Manager for SOTA. Michigan, my state of residence, has a very large amount of beachfront due to its relationship to the Great Lakes.
The "leveling" effect of BOTA is interesting to me; whereas areas with high elevation summits have an inherent DX communication advantage over those with very modest summit elevations, such as Michigan, BOTA beaches are most likely within a hundred feet of sea level. Advantage, then, to Regions with a great number of beaches.
I am also heavily involved in emergency communications, serving now as Michigan District 3 ARES EC, with responsibility for 14 counties on the east side of the LP.
