Our most difficult beach update

More than 3,000 Spanish beaches get full geolocation details

Spanish beach lists have been sucessfully updated with geolocation information, including commune, province and geolocation co-ordinates. Spain, with more than 3,000 beaches listed, was the first country to join our programme, and also the most difficult to update to date. The reason is that, back then when Beaches On The Air was born, our beach creation process was less automated and standardised, and the beach list we used for Spain was also different from the ones that would later become standard. For instance, the location co-ordinates on our original Spanish lists were in UTM instead of the decimal degrees we use now, and the conversion was a cumbersome process, with the added difficulty that Spain spans as many as four different UTM zones!
